The Responsible Fatherhood & Healthy Families Act

In June 2006, Senators Bayh (D-IN) and Obama (D-IL) filed the Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families Act of 2006, (S. 3607). The bill aims to amend Title IV of the Social Security Act to ensure funding for grants to promote responsible fatherhood and strengthen low-income families, including programs that promote healthy marriage, supportive programs to reduce domestic violence in families, elimination of the separate TANF two-parent work participation requirement, and assistance with collecting and disseminating child support. Demonstration grants for the development of Transitional Jobs programs for youth, persons with criminal histories, and persons experiencing homelessness are included in the bill. This is a critical piece of legislation for the continued development of TJ programs for populations of hard-to-employ across the country.

Senators Bayh (D-ID) and Obama (D-IL) will work to reintroduce this legislation in 2007.
