Advancement Plus, St. Paul

Program Design:

Started in 1999 by Lifetrack Resources, a community-based nonprofit, Advancement Plus helps individuals to develop a solid work history, effective workplace behaviors, and the skills necessary to become a successful employee. Participants work in the areas of packaging and assembly, customer service, maintenance, and general office administration depending on their skills and experience.

  • Level I: $6.00 per hour; requires no minimum level of English or work experience
  • Level II: $6.50 per hour; requires a higher English and skill level
  • Level III: $6.50 to $7.00 per hour; requires a higher command of the English language, additional education, and an advanced skill level

Though this program serves a general welfare population, 45% of the participants do not speak English. The majority are not literate in any language and are generally Hmong or Somali refugees. This program provides a place to learn first-hand about the American workplace, how to deal with the demands of full-time employment, and how to develop the skills necessary for job advancement. Functional Work English (the language of the world of work) is taught on-site at a packaging facility owned and operated by Lifetrack Resources to provide increasing levels of English ability. A training specialist at each site provides maximum support and encouragement. Although Advancement Plus is a six-month program, individuals may extend participation for an additional six months.

Key Program Statistics:

  • Hourly wage: $6.00 - $7.50
  • Hours of work per week: 35 + 2 hours training
  • Maximum time allowed in program: 6 months
  • Rate of permanent employment: 50%
